Mala Fatra, also Little Fatra or Lesser Fatra is a mountains range in Western Carpathians located in north-west of central Slovakia. Geomorphologicaly it is a part of Tatra-Fatra area and it is one of the nine Slovak national parks. Mala Fatra consist of two subdivisions Lúčanská Malá Fatra and Krivánska Malá Fatra divided with 12 kilometer long natural border created by river Váh called Strečnianska Tiesňava (Strečno pass) where are located two castles New Strečno Castle and Old Strečno Castle (on the picture). Highest point of Mala Fatra is Veľký Kriváň (1709 metres above the sea). Naturally, there is lots of history in this region. Not only there was born national hero Juraj Jánošík in the village of Terchová, but this region is also known for national specialties like korbáčiky or bryndza. You can also find couple of castles here but also have fun in modern times in several Ski Parks, enjoy the hikes in the summer or skiing in the winter. Visit caves, hotels or chalets in the mountains, waterfalls, see beautiful fauna and flora or enjoy the specific folklore of this region.
